The ALBC celebrates a successful year

The ALBC celebrated a very successful 2021 because of the hard work, dedication and cooperation of its many members and volunteers. Here are some highlights of the year:

  • We doubled our membership and helped people reduce social isolation.
  • We provided a safe environment, following the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA) and Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines for COVID-19 protection.
  • We monitored attendance, hand sanitizing, distancing, and masking when not on the greens, and requested everyone be immunized.
  •  We partnered the new members with experienced ones to increase coaching opportunities.
  • We continued with in-house only competitions and tournaments.
    • Alan Steel was our bowling champ for the season.
    • Brian Slocum (novice) hit the Jack 8 times in one game.
    • Dale Moores won for the most Jack hits for the season.
    • Nancy Deschenes won the most interesting hat competition (the Owl).
    • Jan Peters won the challenge that Cliff Bennet arranged and Nancy videoed, where each member distanced at 6' around the green and tossed their bowl towards the Jack in the center when Cliff sent the signal. Jan's was closest!
    • The Midnight Madness event was hilarious, playing in the dark with flashlights to guide the throwers. Dale Moores set up the rules and fun was had by all.

  • We held 3 in-house tournaments; 2 won by skip Alan Steele's team and 1 won by skip Charlie Taylor's.
  • There were three BBQs convened by Lee Steele and helpers. Thanks to our chef, Cecil.  This was a source of revenue, along with our "Jiffy nights " and our 50/50 draws.
  • Kevin Jones was successful in obtaining grants that covered our major costs of new bowls and the protective cover for our bowling green for the winter.
  • Charlie Taylor held a training session one Saturday for any members who wanted to enhance their skills: it was so successful, our coach, Cecil, will arrange such activities this coming season.
  • This year we are planning to offer Bocce as a less strenuous outdoor sport. In the past we have used the lawn at the back of the clubhouse to provide courts. The ground will be levelled, and then 4 courts set up by our volunteers.

We hope to see all of you returning this year: bring a friend!
